NBA Returns Christmas Day

The NBA Owners and Players have reached a tentative agreement on a 10 year Collective Bargaining Agreement! Season is set to begin December 25th! Joy to the (basketball) World

After talks broke down mid-November, the Players Association had filed for decertification, and 2 anti-trust law suits against the NBA and its owners. Things were just not looking so bright for an NBA 2011-12 Season.

Today, there is new hope! After secretly meeting earlier this week to try to save the season, NBA players and owners met Friday for 15 hours and have come out the other side with a deal (tentative).

What makes this deal tentative?

  • Drug testing, Draft age and such ‘B-list’ issues have not been agreed on, but sides agree, these issues will not block a deal
  • Players Union must be Reformed
  • Owners and players must vote on the final revision of the CBA

What about the Deal?

  • BRI (Basketball Related Income) is slightly higher than 50/50 in favor of the players, (last CBA players had 57% of BRI earnings)
  • New strongly enforced luxury taxations will prevent big market teams from stockpiling talent. (unknown limits)
  • Each team has a 4-year Mid-Level Exception (yearly)
  • Sign and Trade is still available (for only 3 years??)

Training camp will be set for December 9th, should this deal pass.

Finally, the deal is a 10 year deal with a 6-year opt out clause. –> So we’ll probably do this again in 6 years.. BUT…

…after all, all that really matters, is that the NBA is BACK!

Rudy Fernandez, a newly acquired Dallas Maverick, was never a high profile NBA player but always seemed to find a way to make it to the headlines.

Whether he’s dunking around, hitting big shots, complaining about playing time (on his old Portland Trail Blazers team) or swishing this unbelievable “and-1” 3-point shot!

Check it out!

Will to Win

CASE 1: Rondo Returns!!

Boston Celtic, PG, Rajon Rondo dislocated his left elbow in yesterdays win over the Miami Heat, after falling awkwardly under opposing guard Dwayne Wade.

I know, the image is disgusting!

Initially, you might think…
he’s out for the season??.. out for the series??.. out for the game??

.. What?? he’s coming back?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

Rondo wrapped it up and just came right back!

What an ANIMAL!!

CASE 2: Grizzlies Rally!

The Memphis Grizzlies came back from 16 down in the 4th quarter to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder and take a 2-1 lead in the best of 7 series.

Led by the “Best Power Forward in the League” Zach Randolph’s 21-21 night offensively but it was Memphis’ tenacious defense has me pondering over my picks.. and I’m worried. . .

If they play lock down D for 48 min, and Memphis could go all the way to the Finals, especially facing Dallas.. (Disappointed in Lakers)

The Awakening

After watching Kobe Bryant turn his ankle in Game 4 of the first round series vs the Hornets, many questioned whether he would even play in Game 5.

With the series proving to be much more intense and exciting than I had previously predicted, the Hornets surprised once again, ending the 1st quarter with a 32-23 lead. . . Bryant was 0-1 from the field. . . and my ever growing concerns for LA had peaked.

Funny thing about Kobe though, is that the guy just never quits. And mind you, I am NOT what you would call: “Kobe’s Biggest Fan”.

My Awakening:
Is Kobe still playing with that Mummified Finger??
even after the surgery on it??

Kobe Bryant's Legendary Finger

The Legend
of
Kobe Bryant’s Finger

Not just your everyday, normal and ordinary ‘Finger’. . .

It scores.. It passes.. It dunks, blocks, steals, … and ever so often it stares at you with eyes of an assassin and reminds you that it was, is and will forever be.. LEGEND..

But in the end Kobe showed us all that nothing will derail him.. and the Lakers beat the Hornets in Game 5.

Kobe’s Awakening:

Game 6 Tonight! and I’m Sold..

Show’em How It’s Done..

McGill’s own Justin “Jus Fly” Darlington is aiding in this year’s Sprite Slam Dunk Contest! Acting as a mentor for Toronto Raptors participant DeMar DeRozan to improve his De-Dunking Creativity (DeMar was selected to replace the injured Jennings –> thank goodness). Check it out!

The first time I competed against Darlington was in a McGill (Competitive Division) Intramural game in the Winter of 2010, and I had no idea who he was. All I knew was that there was a tall guy at the other end of the floor who was… WHAT! Warming up with Windmill dunks?? And all I could hope was that he was the referee or something..

Shaquille O'Neal and Earl Boykins share a distant conversation

To my dismay, I was wrong…

Darlington went on to have some solid in-game dunks, one of which made our Point Guard look like Earl Boykins trying to stop Shaquille O’Neal (gotta show some love to our PG for at least trying).

What about DeRozan?
I have to admit, I was wrong about this kid. Contrary to my beliefs, my big bro had warned me that he would develop into a consistent scorer for the Raptors. And before I got the chance to begin explaining my side, DeMar had dropped 37 pts vs the Rockets, in what one day could be regarded as his “coming out party”. (oops..)

I expect great things from the DeRozan-Jus Fly Combo!

Ray Allen All-Time Leader in 3-Pointers Made

If you’ve ever watched the Milwaukee Bucks during in the late 90’s or the Seattle SuperSonics (now the Oklahoma City Thunder) back in the mid-2000’s, you witnessed a prolific scorer who arguably has the purest stroke in the NBA, Ray Allen. As of 2007, Allen has been a component of the “Big Three” along with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce on the Boston Celtics, a team loaded with talent. And although, he sacrificed the most out of the three joined superstars, on February 10th, the spotlight was solely focused on number 20.

Ray Allen surpassed the legendary Reggie Miller as the NBA’s all-time leader in career 3-pointers made with 2561. (Watch it)

Ray Allen, Boston Celtics

Technique, Fundamentals and a Lightning Quick Release comprise to form the NBA’s sweetest stroke perfected by few.

All-time in 3-Pointers Made:
(as of Feb 11th)

  1. Ray Allen – 2562 (Active)
  2. Reggie Miller – 2560 (Retired)
  3. Jason Kidd – 1754 (Active)

… and J-Kidd is not even close to catching that

No one deserves this more than Allen, who is one of the hardest working players in the NBA. Now in his 15th season in the league, Ray looks as healthy as ever and still putting up 17 ppg on a dynamic Celtic team.

I Believe I Can Fly

Every basketball fan dreams the perfect NBA game, while playing the role of a Michael Jordan type player. Having the dominance of a LeBron James, accurate showtime passes of a Steve Nash, the dunking creativity of a young Vince Carter and the heart stabbing game-winners of a Kobe Bryant.

Ring a Bell?..

Vince Carter's dunks the ball and his elbow at the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest

Sometimes, I would dream that I got up so high for a dunk that I could just dunk myself as well, and frankly sometimes I did… true story.. But in my opinion, NBA players have continued to strive in evolving their dunking strategies to get closer and closer to that goal.

Need Proof? Vince Carter’s ‘Elbow Hanger’, Dwight Howard’s ’12ft Rim Dunk’ and obviously Michael Jordan’s ‘Space Jam Half Court Dunk’ (where his arm stretched out, that was awesome..)

Michael Jordan does a 2.0 version of the Air Jordan Dunk vs the Monstars

But last Wednesday, the art of dunking entered a new era! It was revolutionary, eye-opening, exciting and just “Sick, Wicked and Nasty’!

Phoenix Suns’ performer Nick Corrales during a third quarter timeout trampolined off for a dunk and accidentally Dunked Himself!

Check this out!

You probably watched it twice.. I know, its that cool!
